Kenya in 2024
The need
Kenya is experiencing a growing ‘youth bulge’, with nearly a quarter of its population aged between 10 and 19 years. Kenya’s youth population faces significant challenges, especially regarding sexual and reproductive health. A high unmet need for contraceptives among young people has meant that in Kenya, one in five girls leaves her teens as a mother. In terms of HIV/AIDS, just over half of young people know about prevention methods, leading to 78% of new HIV infections falling to adolescent girls and young women. Sexual and gender-based violence is a significant challenge in Kenya and is a driver of unintended pregnancies and HIV infection. A third of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence since age 15, and 13% have experienced sexual violence.

Tiko in Kenya
Tiko has been operating in Kenya since 2016. As our flagship country programme, Kenya holds Tiko’s most extensive operation.
Our work focuses on increasing access to sexual and reproductive health services across 17 counties in Kenya. Since 2021, we have expanded our service offering to include access to HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), antiretroviral therapy (ART), sexual and gender-based violence support and adding mental health services to support the ripple effects of the triple threat.
Tiko partners with both national and regional governments and an array of different partners to implement operations within Kenya. In 2024, we almost doubled the number of public facilities delivering services through the Tiko platform in one year to 197 facilities. We joined forces with the Kenyan Ministry of Health to become a key partner in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence. Tiko is also the implementing partner for the world’s first Development Impact Bond (DIB) for adolescent sexual and reproductive health. The DIB works with the Government of Kenya and various outcomes funders and an investor to reduce new HIV infections, AIDS-related deaths and teenage pregnancies among adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 in ten high-burden counties in Kenya.

The world’s first Development Impact Bond for adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health
With our partners we are actively exploring outcome-based financing as a funding mechanism of our work, building on our experience of delivering the world’s first ever Development Impact Bond (DIB) for ASRH in Kenya.
The ASRH DIB is a partnership between Tiko, the UN in Kenya, Government of Kenya, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and the Bridges Outcomes Partnership. Tiko is scheduled to exceed our agreed performance metrics, against which our payment is linked, ahead of programme completion.
At Tiko we capture, validate and report on the impact we have in real-time. Our culture is driven by a focus on high performance to deliver as many positive outcomes for the girls we support as possible. Our approach is perfectly aligned with innovative outcomes-based financing models, which links our payments directly to the validated outcomes we deliver.
We are exploring similar outcomes-based financing models in our other countries, including South Africa and Zambia.
