The challenge
The triple threat – an urgent crisis
Nearly a quarter of Kenya’s population is aged between 10-19 years old. Young people, especially girls, face significant health challenges: unintended pregnancy, HIV and sexual violence. This Triple Threat creates interconnected vulnerabilities for Kenyan girls, undermining their health and wellbeing, education and economic prospects.

Many girls face a dangerous mix of challenges – money problems, pressure to have sex, and being kept out of school. Poverty makes things worse, pushing some into sex to survive or into marriage at a very young age.
Our solution
Scaling evidence-based healthcare across Kenya and beyond
Since 2016, Tiko has piloted, pioneered and scaled our girl-centred ecosystem approach in Kenya to address fragmented health service provision and ineffiencies resulting from traditional aid delivery. Using evidence from programme pilots and innovations, in Kenya we first established our now proven model, demonstrating how tech-enabled integrated health care for girls reduces unintended pregnancy and HIV rates. In recent years, we have begun scaling this model across 6 further countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Growth of no-cost healthcare for girls
We continue to expand the scope of our work integrating support for sexual violence survivors into our holistic ‘Triple Threat’ approach. Through our platform, girls can now access an ecosystem of family planning services, HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), antiretroviral therapy (ART), sexual and gender-based violence support, and mental health services, along with vital hygiene products, all at no cost.
From scale to sustainability
In the next four years, we aim to deepen and scale our impact in areas where we work to reach 80% of girls aged 15-24 living in poverty. We will also continue piloting innovations to support girls to access education and learn new livelihood skills. We will use learning from successful initiatives in Kenya in other countries where we work.
Explore our ecosystem approach
Tiko connects girls to a no-cost, integrated ecosystem of healthcare and support, designed around their lives. The ecosystem consists of peer mobilisers, community-based organizations, health providers and retailers who are all connected to the Tiko platform to give girls access to family planning, HIV prevention and treatment, sexual violence screening and support, and health products.

Innovation
World’s first Development Impact Bond for adolescent sexual and reproductive health
Tiko implemented the world’s first Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Development Impact Bond project as an innovative pay-for-performance model in Kenya. We have so far implemented two phases of the project. The first was a partnership involving Kenya’s Ministry of Health, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in 2020-21. The second (2023-25) was a partnership involving Kenya’s Ministry of Health, CIFF, the United Nations (UNFPA, UNAIDS, WHO) and Bridges Outcomes Partnerships.

How it works
Verified data, tangible life changes
Upfront investment
Risk-taking investors provide the initial capital for Tiko and our local partners to establish an ecosystem of integrated health care to increase adolescent girls’ access to HIV and sexual and reproductive health services in targeted areas.
Service delivery
Tiko and our local public, private and community-based partners implement the tech-enabled programme
Independent verification
Third-parties, partners, users, and built-in authentication safeguards ensure we verify that the girls actually received care and that health behaviours improved.
Donor payment
Once success is proven through verified data and transformational results, outcome funders (donors) release their funds.
