Tiko and Dis-Chem partner for free girls contraceptive care in South Africa

Accessing healthcare should be simple, but for many girls and young women in South Africa, the hurdles, ranging from long wait times at public clinics to financial anxiety, can be overwhelming.

Tiko believes that a girl’s zip code or purse shouldn’t determine her ability to manage her reproductive health.  A new Tiko pilot with Dis-Chem Clinics, launched in March 2026, will bring high-quality contraceptive care services directly to the doorstep of  girls and young women in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg.

The Tiko and Dis-Chem pilot will focus on 200 first-time girl users. Tiko is fully subsidising the fee for girls and young women aged 15–24. By removing this financial barrier, Tiko helps girls turn a ‘maybe one day’ health decision into a ‘right now’ reality.

“Our partnership with Dis-Chem isn’t just about paying a fee. It’s about redesigning the healthcare journey for a girl. By integrating Tiko’s ecosystem approach with the private sector’s reach, we are dismantling the barriers of cost and  convenience, including distance, that have historically sidelined girls’ health. Providing choice for our girls will  enable us to address the triple threat of unintended pregnancies, HIV and sexual violence and ensure our girls reach their full potential,” says Sheilla Benyera, Country Director, Tiko South Africa

For a girl who has never sought family planning, the public health system can feel intimidating. By offering an alternative access point through Dis-Chem clinics, the burden on public facilities is reduced while providing a private, professional and welcoming environment for a girl’s very first consultation.

To ease their fears, girls are often accompanied by a Tiko mobiliser who can offer practical and moral support.

This partnership leverages the unique strengths of both organizations.

  • Tiko provides full subsidy funding, real-time digital tracking, and a frontline peer mobiliser and provider, retailer and pharmacy network to support girls’ access to triple threat services.
  • Dis-Chem provides an extensive service footprint through a network of professional and trusted clinical access,  with an existing partnership with the South African Government for HIV and Family Planning commodities,  which enables triple threat services to be fully subsidised for girls. Services offered through Dis-Chem give greater options and convenience for girls through extended hours including weekends.

By the end of this pilot, Tiko aims to showcase a scalable model that proves when the private sector and a girl-centric mission align, partners power and improve health outcomes for girls across communities.

Tiko strengthens the resilience of girls across Africa by protecting them from the ‘triple threat’ of unintended pregnancy, HIV and sexual violence. We build health ecosystems connecting girls to free services in their communities. By removing barriers and acting as a companion, Tiko supports girls to shape futures where they thrive.
